astronomy-to-zoology:Limosa Harlequin Frog (Atelopus limosus)Although called a frog, the Limosa Harlequin frog is actually a colorful species of Stubfoot Toad (Atelops spp.) which is endemic to Panama. In Panama A. limosus inhabits stream banks in tropical moist lowland forests and rivers of the Chagres watershed in the central part of the country. Two color forms of A. limosus are known, a upland form with a black and green coloration, and a lowland form which is predominately brown. Like other Atelopus spp. the Limosa harlequin frog likely feeds on a variety of insects and other terrestrial invertebrates.Currently Atelopus limosus is listed as Endangered by the IUCN and is declining rapidly throughout its range. This listing is due to two major threats. Firstly the spread of the infectious fungus Chtridiomycosis which has been causing population declines in many neotropical amphibians. Habitat loss and destruction is the second major concern. ClassificationAnimalia-Chordata-Amphibia-Anura-Bufonidae-Atelopus limosusImage(s): Brian Gratwicke -- source link
