Rani Lakshmibai was a gallant queen of the princely state of Jhansi, India. A legendary figure associated with early resistance against the British Raj. Following the death of her husband, Maharaja of Jhansi Raja Gangadhar Rao Newalkar, British governor-general of India Lord Dalhousie refused to recognise the Maharaja’s adopted son as his heir, and annexed Jhansi under their policy of the ‘doctrine of lapse.’ Lakshmibai gathered her forces and rose in revolt against the British, and joined the Indian Rebellion of 1857. -- source link
