Demure rainbow tints for this itajime-shibori kimono, paired with a rustic botan karakusa (peony and arabesques) tsumugi obi.Itajime is a shibori (tie and dye) technique were fabric is folded (a bit like origami paper), and then hold tighly between boards (or sticks) before dyeing.First fabric is folded to make a long band. Then the band is folded over itself to form one of the following shapes : 1. shikaku ori (square folds) - video2. nitouhensankakkei ori (isosceles triangle folds) - video3. seisankakukei ori (equilateral triangle folds) - video4. fukuzatsu ori (intricated folds) - videoYou can then dye fabric by dropping tint on the edges, use boards (or lids as seen below) to create white areas where dye won’t bleed too much into, etc. Basically, by adjusting width of folds, tightness of the boards, and amount of dye anything is possible! -- source link
