A tattered folder with this image and a few others of John Gruber’s gentle and bearded face stood out when we were looking for this week’s story.Gruber arguably helped begin Pittsburgh’s rabid interest in pro sports, printing the first baseball standings in any city newspaper during the late 1800s and working for nearly 40 years as the Pirates’ official scorekeeper. That’s why this posthumous plaque hung in Forbes Field’s press box for many years. Where it is today, we do not know, but on Wednesday at The Digs, we share Gruber’s Pittsburgh story. -- source link
