If you frequent our Tumblr, you know the Museum’s been celebrating women artists this March for Women’s History Month. Here in Adult Programs, we’ve put a focus on acknowledging the unique contributions and struggles of women through our events throughout the Museum this month. We kicked March off with female-powered First Saturday: She Knows No Bounds which featured several dynamic and diverse performances by Brooklyn-based women artists. For our READ Brooklyn Author’s Book Fair we hosted Tanwi Nandini Islam, Ashley C Ford, and Daniel José Older for a lively discussion which ventured into the limitations of the word “diversity” in the publishing world and how to create characters with identities different than your own. Then, during the fair several of our female authors activated our gallery space with readings from their newest novels. Of course, the Sackler Center has been holding it down with timely programs focusing on social change. Yesterday, they hosted an intergenerational panel discussion on the role of culture in social change with Kathleen Cleaver, Monica Dennis, Jamal Joseph, Carmen Perez, Laura Whitehorn, and Soffiyah Elijah. Later this week, there will be another conversation as part of the States of Denial series focusing on the imprisonment of women in Jamaica. Though we’ve placed significant focus on the issue this month, Adult Programs is devoted to promoting female artists year-round. Just go check out the rad women we have coming up in for April’s First Saturday! Posted by Claire Kissinger -- source link
