Italian Cemetery in BedfordXA | Tri-X | Diafine 3+3I first discovered this cemetery when I bought my Chrysler. I had to take it to a dealer in Bedford to get it serviced and as it was 50 miles away I used to make a day of it. The cemetery was just down the road from the dealership and I used to wander around take photographs and have my lunch there. The Italians came over to Bedford, at the end of the second world war, to work in the brickworks. At that time Bedford was a mass of sprawling brickworks and clay pits and was the main centre for brick making in England. With all the destruction from the Blitz and other bombings there was a massive demand for bricks to rebuild London, the suburbs and beyond.I met some wonderful Italians there, all told me the story of their lives. Some came over as the “first generation” after WWII and others were the subsequent generations. They have a strong community and affinity with Bedford and everyone of them is proud of the work they - and their families - did to help rebuild Britain. The history and the story of the Italian community in Bedford. -- source link
