1863-project-art:OC-tober: Day 4Richard Feversham - The World Turned Upside DownRichard was meant to be on stage practically from birth. He went to London as a teenager to pursue this, and he was quite happy with his theatre troupe until the Puritan-dominated Parliament banned the staging of full plays in 1642. Undaunted, the troupe just went north and kept acting, at least until a schism developed between the members. A few of the actors became increasingly pretentious and showed disdain for comic relief, and Richard, always a man of action, teamed up with his best friend in the troupe, Edmund Oxenbrigg, to use their knowledge of special effects to deal with it. They did this by putting a tiny smidge of gunpowder in the worst offender’s prop pipe, and when he lit it during a performance, it went up in flames. Sadly, he threw the pipe at them, they dodged it, and the theatre also went up in flames. Luckily for Richard and Edmund, Amphilis and Mildred were at the show looking for fellow rebellious spirits, and since the theatre troupe was disbanding for obvious reasons they happily joined up and now use their skills with explosives to destroy property, create diversions, and open the occasional door.Richard himself is deeply anti-authoritarian and an odd blend of mature and childish - he can explain complex political stuff to Aibhilin and readily does so, but he also loves flipping off authority figures behind their backs and sticking his tongue out at them. He also loves writing parody Cavalier poetry and then reading it completely seriously, pretending he thinks it’s radical. He frequently collaborates on comedic projects with best friend Edmund, and it’s not unusual to find them absolutely destroying each other either literally through slapstick or metaphorically by cracking each other up over dumb things. (Edmund notably takes pride in being able to consistently make Richard snort-laugh with William Prynne jokes.)Because he often seems like an overgrown teenager, Aibhilin looks up to him and he’s taken her on as a sort of adoptive younger sister figure, encouraging her to be a kid as much as possible and occasionally enabling her early teenage hijinks. (Their friendship is, no joke, one of my favorite things to write.) For his part, Richard is actually pretty good at figuring people out, and he and Mildred have teamed up to get Amphilis and Edmund together. Which will hopefully happen…eventually. -- source link
