The Museum of the Rockies has the world’s largest collection of Triceratops, almost all found in Montana. As with the T-Rext, they have a series of skulls in a row showing what they believe is a growth history. Apparently this display is controversial because the largest Triceratops skulls develop 2 large holes in them. These skulls with holes were previously thought to be a separate species called Torosaurus, but this museum has argued that no youth of that species have ever been found and therefore they are more likely an adult triceratops. The holes in the skulls may have been filled with a weaker, cartilagenous material to reduce the total skull weight.Torosaurus is apparently one of the famous/fossil mascots of Paleontology at Yale University, so they haven’t been too thrilled with this museum’s argument that it isn’t a separate species, just another triceratops. To establish this firmly, they are using a microscope based technique - basically counting “rings” in dinosaur bones exactly as is done with dating trees based on tree rings. Basically, using this technique the full triceratops skulls should always be younger than the ones that develop holes. -- source link
