I just finished reading Raise the Red Lantern last night. It’s a collection of three novellas starting in the 1920s and ending in 1949 with the Communist Revolution. To me, it was equally gross and engrossing, with a lot of awful things happening to everyone, which is probably the point that Su Tong wanted to drive home - that no one in China escaped the Communist Revolution unscathed.
