Blood ceiling – Genkoan temple, Kyoto, Japan. I’d never come across this before but in 1600 Tokugawa Ieyasu’s retainer Torii Mototada discovered that a massive force was about to attack Fushimi Castle. He led a band of defenders in a bloody ‘last stand’ to give Ieyasu time to get away. Everything -and everyone - was left where they fell, for months. Later the castle was demolished - however the floors were retained and donated to at least five temples in the Kyoto area in honour of the dead. These were installed as ceilings. And the blood stains including foot and handprints are still very visible. -- source link
