Archaeological evidence shows that they have lived on the ChukchiPeninsula for 2,000 years, and they also used to live on Big DiomedeIsland in the Bering Strait. The village of Naukan was founded in the 14th century, anduntil the forced resettlement of its inhabitants, it was theeasternmost settlement in Eurasia (this distinction now belongs tothe village of Uelen). Before the resettlement, Naukan’s populationwas around 400.In 1954, the Soviet Union evicted the village, as part of a strategicobjective of a possibly military confrontation with the US. TheBering Strait at this location is so narrow that Alaska can actuallybe seen from the shore. The eviction formally ended on November20th, 1958.The Naukan people were relocated to various places, most to thevillage of Nunyamo, which no longer exists. Nowadays, thedescendants of Naukan’s inhabitants live in the Chukchi settlementsof Uelen, Lavrentiya and Lorino; in the Siberian Inuit settlements ofChaplino, Sireniki and Uelkal; and in the town and cities of Anadyr, Magadanand Vologda. The surrounding geography includes steep rocky cliffs and soft soilbluffs. The ruins of the village are a mix of the modern and thetraditional. -- source link
