Statue of Hugh Mercer, Physician, Apothecary, Friend of George Washington and Brigadier General in the Revolutionary War, Fredericksburg, ole Virginny, 2007.Scottish born and trained Mercer came to establish a life in the New World. After a sojourn in what is now Mercersburg, Pennsylvania and service in the French and Indian Wars, he settled in Fredericksburg among its numerous Scottish colonists and established a medical practice. With the Revolution, he became a General of US forces and was killed at the battle of Princeton in 1777.In a Southern city it is nice to see a public monument, a rather handsome statue, honoring someone other than one of the traitors and seditionists responsible for the mass carnage which was the Civil War. Sadly, Mercer was marginal enough to US history that I was largely unaware of him until looking for information to caption this photo. -- source link
