Statue of King KhasekhemwyThis beautiful statue of Khasekhemwy, the last king of the 2nd Dynasty, marks the beginning of art carved from hard stone, the king is shown seated on his throne, wearing the White Crown of Upper Egypt and a tight robe with long sleeves associated with the heb-sed ritual of royal renewal.His right arm is placed on his right leg, while his left hand reaches across to hold his right arm. Part of the right side of the king’s head has been lost, but the remarkable beauty and quality of the carving is still evident.Early Dynastic Period, 2nd Dynasty, ca. 2690 BC. Grey slate, from Edfu.
