Camille ACTUALLY WANTED TO DO HIS PART??? I am amazed. You might be somewhat less-so at the wording. Anyway, apparently no one agreed that he would make a good representative on mission and his request was ignored.…………………….………………………………………………………………….Do we have a gif of Saint-Just laughing somewhere? Because I feel this would fit very well here.Actually, I don’t get it. Does he just want to be sent on mission to… see his dad? And take a vacation? Oh, Camille.Try as I might, I can’t really think of an alternate reading. Even accepting the possibility (probability?) that he’s joking, or at least half-joking, I can see why the wording alone wouldn’t inspire much confidence.Well, I’d bump the estimate of the joking-ness of the wording, at least, to three-quarters or more. That’s kind of the problem though, you know? If he was trying to show that he’s taking the responsibility of being a representative of mission seriously, joking about it probably wasn’t the best strategy. I mean, maybe he just didn’t want to sound desperate, but it seems like “Here’s how I can be useful to the Republic” might have been a better tack…Eh. But–it’s also a casual note to his friend and colleague Robespierre, though, isn’t it? It’s entirely true that the Republic’s purse isn’t meant to fund Camille Desmoulins’ vacation to see his old dad for a few days. On the other hand, as governmental corruption goes, I have a hard time getting worked up about a not-very-official request that amounts to “hey, if we need to send someone out by Guise, can I go, I have family there, we’ve already got plenty of other guys going out on business to their hometowns.”What was the mission in question? -- source link
