peashooter85:The Thai Type 91 Police Carbine,During World War II, Thailand was an ally of Japan and thus received a number of weapons from the Japanese. Thus when the war ended Thailand found itself with a large surplus of WWII vintage Japanese arms, especially the Japanese Type 38 bolt action rifle. After the war the Thai government decided to put some of these rifles to use to arm Thailand’s police forces. The Thai Type 91 carbine was produced from spare Type 38 rifles which were cut down into carbine size. The barrel was shortened as was the stock. What is especially interesting about the Type 91 was that the stock was recut to mimic the stock of the American M1 Carbine, giving the Type 91 an appearance of being a hybrid between a Japanese Type 38 and an M1 carbine. The front sight also mimicked that of the M1 and the shoulder sling was similar to an M1’s shoulder sling. The Type 91 retained the elevation rear sight of the Type 38, as well as the typical Japanese dust cover over the actions. Often the bolt handle was turned down, but not always. It also retained it’s original Japanese 6.5x50mm caliber as Thailand had a large surplus of Japanese ammunition after the war. -- source link
