Libra does hold the scales which is what you would use to measure librae.The abbreviation is for libra as a measure of weight. Libra has the “scales” meaning, of course, but it is not the source of abbreviation. I said “almost” because the reference to the constellation is an extension of the other meaning of the word. -- source link
