“Homosexuals Arrested at AIDS Drug Protest,” The New York Times, March 25, 1987. @nytimes. On March 24, 1987, AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power (ACT UP), led by pioneers like Larry Kramer, Vito Russo, Arnie Kantrowitz, and others, held its inaugural demonstration, as hundreds of activists descended upon Wall Street to protest government mismanagement of the AIDS crisis and the pharmaceutical industry’s profiteering (especially that of Burroughs Wellcome, manufacturer of AZT seventeen ACT UP members were arrested. In May 1987, the FDA announced it would shorten the drug approval process by two years. Over the next ten years, members of the New York City ACT UP chapter organized or participated in at least one hundred and fifty major demonstrations across the world.
