honorthegods:Obelisk of Antinous (Barberini Obelisk) Piazzale del Pincio (Rome, Lazio, Italy photographed by Stephen J. Danko on 11 August 2011.The obelisk is made of red granite and stands 31 feet/9.5 meters in height on a 26 foot/8 meter base. It was discovered in 1633 near the Porta Maggiore, one of Rome’s eastern gates. It is an important artifact because it describes the beliefs of the ancient cult of Antinous in Egyptian hieroglyphics. The epigraphy claims the obelisk originally marked the grave of Antinous, and scholars continue to debate that location: Antinoopolis in Egypt, Hadrian’s villa at Tivoli, an as yet undiscovered herõon in Rome, or Claudiopolis, Antinous’ birthplace.South Face Obelisk Inscription:Antinous the God is here!He rests in this placeWhich is in the Border Fields of Our Lady Rome.In all Sacred Places of EgyptHe is recognized as Divine.Temple shrines are raised to Him,And He is revered as a GodBy the oracles and priestsOf Upper and Lower Egypt,Indeed by all the people of Egypt! The City of Antinoopolis was named in His honour,Populated by the Greeks of EgyptAs well as priests from the temples of Egypt,And those who have come to this placeWith the promise of splendours beyond all measure.A Temple to Antinous the God,Who is among the Shining Ones of Heaven,Is located in this cityBuilt of good white stone,Surrounded by sphinxes and statuesAnd innumerable columnsLike those Temples erectedBy Our Ancient AncestorsAnd also like those of the Greeks. All Gods and GoddessesGive Him the Breath of Eternal LifeThat He might breatheAs One Who Is Eternally Young!Today, October 30, modern worshipers of Antinous observe Foundation Day, a festival to honor the establishment of the ancient city of Antinoopolis and the modern restoration of the worship of Antinous in 2002. -- source link
