SacrificeWeek two of Stanuary! Some thoughts under the cut!Leave a tip! (Ko-Fi) | Etsy Shop | Twitter So I really love the sliver in “Not What He Seems” where Stan has a fun afternoon with Dipper and Mabel and is fully aware he is on the precipice of bringing his brother back. What strikes me about this episode every time I watch it is how Stan’s core want is family. We see that throughout the show with the number of times Stan comes through for the kids. We see that throughout his entire life… after being disowned by his family and trying to work his way back to them which leads him further than ever from rejoining them. When Ford calls him, he’s in a really low place and this finally seems like a thread of hope he can grasp. Only to be shut out once again. :(Still, he doesn’t give up and works like he’s worked his entire life to have his family back.Life doesn’t stand still though. Time didn’t stop. He built up the Mystery Shack, built his niche, built relationships with the new generation of his family. So while he doesn’t have the life he used to have or the life he wishes to have, he has fulfilled his goal of having family. The meaning, of course, has changed with the generation shift but he has a family, a successful business, a place to hang his hat…But it’s not his life, it’s not his name, and it’s not his property. It’s not his.And in that sliver of an afternoon, Stan draws closer to the heavy conclusion that he is letting go of the fulfillment of his current life in order to fulfill his past wants for someone he’s not even sure wants him. You can see the weight of that moment resting on him especially when he’s in front of the window preparing to speak to Dipper and Mable. He hopes that it will work out. In spite of everything because Stan was, is, and will always be a hopeful, family man.To break down the piece, I wanted the weight of bringing his brother back to carry over along with nodding to the reflection motif in NWHS. Then I wanted to add a layer of his reflection, what he’s casting in his mind and looking forward to while also acknowledging where he is in this idyllic scene. -- source link
