odditiesoflife:Baby MuskoxThis is a baby muskox who is just two weeks old. The muskox or musk ox (Ovibos moschatus) is known for its thick coat and the strong odor emitted by the males, from which its name derives. This “musky” odor is used to attract females during mating season. The female muskox are pregnant up to eight months. The infants are able to keep up with their mothers and the rest of the herd just a few hours after being born. Nature seems to favor baby animals and humans to be cute. I’m not sure how that genetically provides an advantage for their survival, but it does and its is a field of study. Scientist Konrad Lorenz proposed the concept of baby schema (Kindchenschema), a set of facial and body features, that make a creature appear “cute” and activate (release) in others the motivation to care for it.source 1, 2, 3; photo by Randy Kokesch -- source link
