The .22 M1 Carbine — The Erma Werke E M1During World War II Erma Werke manufactured small arms for the German military. After World War II Erma needed to change it production in order to meet the demands of a new peacetime market. Throughout the 50’s and 60’s Erma would become famous for manufacturing copies of several famous WWII firearms, including the Luger Pistol and Mauser rifle.In the early 1950’s Erma began production of the E M1, a copy of the M1 Carbine chambered in .22 long rifle and .22 magnum. Initially the were used as training rifles by the US Military, but in the 60’s popular demand for the new carbine convinced Erma to export them for the civilian market. Imported by Iver Johnson and other small dealers, they were fun flinking rifles that were modestly priced and affordable for the average American. The rifles were also popular in Western Europe, the Far East, and South America. Production would continue until 2000. -- source link
