lesbianartandartists:Deborah Bright, Dream Girls, 1989-90The figure is Deborah Bright (American, born 1950), who has manually collaged herself into the fictive space of Hollywood cinema. That her appearance in these photographs resists accommodation is in part due to the minimal touch-ups done on the re-photographed image. Formally, Bright’s figure should and does stand apart from the actors around her, performing both their theatrical role and gender designation. The butch identity that she inserts in the photograph disturbs Hollywood’s highly regulated representations of sexuality. In another collaged film still, Natalie Wood strokes Bright’s head, apparently in an act of affection, while James Dean looks on, his head in Wood’s lap. In such images, Bright does not “belong” because her appearance offers another version of difference, one that disrupts the essentialism of heterosexual normativity.Helen Molesworth, This Will Have Been : Art, Love & Politics in the 1980s, (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2012), 327. -- source link
