spaceplasma:Monoceros R2 Molecular Cloud in Visible and in Infrared LightThe Monoceros R2 is a giant molecular cloud and one of the closest massive star forming regions to the Sun. Mon R2 was first recognized as a chain of reflection nebulae illuminated by A- and B-type stars. The brightest of these nebulae were studied as far back as Seares & Hubble, and were included in a larger study of nebulous objects by Hubble (1922), who demonstrated that the extended emission can be attributed to the associated stars. The Mon R2 region received renewed interest with the first observations of carbon monoxide in the interstellar medium and the discovery of molecular clouds. For more information:The Monoceros R2 Molecular CloudCredit: ESO/J.
