The Arab Revolt began enthusiastically and energetically in the summer of 1916, as Arab rebel forces fell on the holiest cities of Islam to consolidate their hold on the Hejaz. 30,000 Arab tribesmen led by the Sharif’s son Faisal attacked the city of Medina. The Turkish garrison resisted strongly, but Faisal’s brother Hussein had more luck penetrating Mecca with a force of horsemen, taking the center of religion in the Middle East with three days of street-fighting.Elsewhere, Arab forces captured Jeddah from its Ottoman garrison, just in time for a half-dozen British advisors to be landed there, including Captain T.E. Lawrence, who would make his name as Lawrence of Arabia. With funds and artillery supplied by the British, the Arab forces would eventually conquer Medina, before consolidating the rest of the Hejaz in September with the capture of the city of Taif. -- source link
