1991-1995 Anime PrimerThe Spirit of Wonder: Miss China’s Ring (1992)Miss China, as she is known by her customers, is the young proprietor of a popular pub and a master of the martial arts. When she isn’t serving up pints and meat pies, she employs her powerful kicks to bust down the doors of her irresponsible boarders, Dr. Breckenridge and his assistant Jim. While the duo regularly comes up with genius inventions, they prove strangely incapable of attracting the interest of financial backers, forcing Miss China to resort to threats to get them to cough up the rent. Even their Space Reflex Telescope, a matter transporter that allows one to touch the Moon without ever leaving Earth, isn’t enough to earn them fame and fortune… so instead Jim opts to use it to give Miss China the birthday gift of a lifetime: the most beautiful ring in the universe. This overlooked OVA is based on Kenji Tsuruta’s (Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, Wandering Island) intermittently published manga. Combining soft science fiction with magical realism and a touch of romance, Spirit of Wonder: Miss China’s Ring is equal parts heartwarming and surreal. Expect no explanation as to why such advanced technology exists in the otherwise realistic turn of the century setting, and the less time spent pondering the vague workings of Dr. Breckenridge’s telescope the better; they’re all a framing device for China’s expressive emotional states, in particular her unspoken love for Jim. Pleasing animation, wondrous imagery and a dreamy soundtrack by Kohei Tanaka (Gunbuster, One Piece) makes for an enchanted viewing. -- source link
