Petrified woodFossils are organic remnants turned into stone by a variety of processes known under the umbrella term taphonomy, many of which take place while the sediment is turning into rock. Later in their geological history, fossils can be further replaced as mineralised fluids pass through the rocks deep underground. The replacement mineral varies, but is often silica. The Tree log in the photo was replaced by silica, some of which is stained red and yellow by iron oxide minerals such as limonite and haematite, leaving the details of the bark wonderfully preserved.LozImage credit: Jon Sullivan -- source link
