buddhabrot:Timoclea killing her rapist, 1659 by Elisabetta SiraniTimoclea of Thebes was the sister of Theagenes, the last commander of the Sacred Band of Thebes, which, you may recall, was an all-gay military unit. When the forces of Alexander the Great sacked Thebes in 335 BCE, a Thracian captain raped Timoclea, and then demanded she show him where the valuables of the household had been hidden. She told him everything had been tossed into the well outside the house. When he went to look down the well, she not only threw him in, but tossed heavy stones on top of him until he was dead. His men dragged her before Alexander, who ordered her to be set free, probably laughing his ass off at her resourcefulness. This was a big deal, because the city of Thebes was leveled and the populace enslaved, all except for Timoclea and her family, and the descendants of the poet Pindar. And let’s have a round of applause for painter Elisabetta Sirani (1638-1665) of Bologna, Italy, who produced over 200 works of art before her death at age 27 and was given a public funeral in recognition of her importance. -- source link
