A Zande Warrior and his BadiareThe warriors of the Zande people of North Central Africa, prior to European colonization, customarily married a younger man, whom he addressed as his Badiare, or “lover,” and he referred to his badiarre’s parents as “mother” and “father-in-law.” It was his duty to train his young husband as a warrior, and the younger man would carry his lover’s shield into battle.” Later, the warrior would marry a woman, and the younger man, now a warrior, would take a Badiare of his own.A painting of queer love in Africa.
