aquaristlifeforme:Hi Friends. OTTERS DO NOT MAKE GOOD PETS AND HERE ARE SOME REASON WHY-They have some of the strongest jaws in the animal kingdom, and when they bite, it hurts, trust me. They can become very trained, but never fully trustworthy and are especially dangerous around children. They are far from being domesticated. They also have a musky odor and glands for producing scent marking mucus that is worse than any domestic pet’s smell. You (and other people in your household) should be rabies vaccinated if you are going to bring a wild animal in your house, and your animal should be rabies vaccinated as well. Rabies vaccinations are about $1000 each. Otters can also carry all sorts of other zoonotic diseases. They have high metabolisms and need to be fed many small meals 5-6 times per day. They eat a good percent of their body weight per day. That’s a lot of food you have to buy. And it has to be high quality food so they don’t get sick. And if they do get sick you will have to pay a whole lot of money to a very specialized vet, and that’s if you can find a vet that will agree to even look at your wild animal. They need lots of secure space. Otters are masters of escape and very cunning. They are active and needs lots of space to run around and wreak otter havoc. But this space needs to also be otter proof, harder to achieve than one might think. Instead, go to your local zoo or aquarium and check out the otters there. They are well cared for. You can enjoy the otters doing their super cute otter thing without any of the work, expense, or worry of trying to keep one yourself. And ask the keepers lots of questions, we love to talk about our animals. -- source link
