Kiyohime crossing the Hidaka river, powerful art by Miki Katoh (seen on)This piece show a variation of the Kiyohime myth. Usually the snake transformation takes place at the Dojoji temple - it’s the version featured in kabuki play Musume Dojoji.The variation tells that Kiyohime, enraged by the monk Anchin rejection, transformed into a snake/dragon while swimming across the raging Hidaka river. (This take is super interesting as dragon/snakes are usually linked to water bodies in Asia.)This transformation is heavily pictured in art, like in this famous ukiyoe by Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (the uroko kimono pattern depicts snake/dragon scales): -- source link
