reenuka:I’ve been letting out my inner Indian Queen — or Hindustani Maharani, or Desi Devi, if you prefer — lately, and I fucking love it. This started as something for #ReclaimTheBindiWeek, which I missed by about a week, I think, but it turned into just embracing my culture through fashion in a way that I haven’t before. Growing up in the US as a Desi girl can be difficult, because you rarely see yourself represented in media — and when you do, it’s either as a stereotype, or a joke, or it’s a bindi, or mehndi, or something considered “new age” (despite the fact that it’s been around far longer than anything western) on white skin. Now, there’s a little more brown representation around, and I’m thankful. But even though I’ve always been proud of my culture, it has been a journey to where I am today, where I can express it openly and unapologetically. And I like this place, so I take lots of selfies here. -- source link
