somesurrealist:blackrebelz:simplyahopelessdaydreamer:I remember a teacher telling me how Archaeologists would hack off the noses of statues they found in order to remove any indication that it was of a black person or any POC. It hurts me to think of all the art we’ve lost and damaged because of historical revisionism and flat out racism.erasure of ethnic identity in art is, in fact, a form of genocide.this concept is a conspiracy theory created by Black Nationalist groups (as in, Black Hebrew Israelites, Hoteps, and the sort, NOT as in Black power or anti-racist action groups)these groups are usually just plain racist to non-Black minorities, and tend to believe in eugenics-type pseudo-science and promote factually incorrect (usually anti-semitic and/or anti-Asian) revisionist history.many of them also appropriate Muslim and Jewish practices and ideas in ways that are disrespectful and that hurt those groupsthe noses of these statues often erode more quickly because that part sticks out the most. Egyptian ones in particular can erode faster because of the materials they were made of (which were softer) IF YOU ARE REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT CULTURAL GENOCIDE IN ART/ARCHAEOLOGY you can look into how Native people’s art in museums was often stolen by colonisers with no fair trade made with the community. you can look into the history of Orientalism in Europe, Asian cultural appropriation in European art, and the fetishisation of Asian womenyou can look into the many art museums which steal Egyptian artifacts that should be in the hands of professional archeologists, AND that Westerners should not have stolen from the Egyptian government anywayyou can look into the commodification of Hawaiian culture and the destruction of sacred sites in Hawaiiyou can fight for those causes, for the respect and protection of sacred objects, places, and remains.AND you can fight for the end of actual revisionist history like this that takes real issues that do exist and falsifies information about themmake history education more available and less euro-centric.white people did not break off the noses of these statues but they HAVE stolen from minority communities, robbed the graves of our ancestors, and desecrated our landsbe angry about that, which they HAVE done, instead -- source link
