complaintificate:necclibrary:‘Falser Words Were Never Spoken’ - Great article from the New York Times about how quotations are often taken out of context, misattributed, or outright changed and proliferated. The lesson? Fact check! Not sure if a quote is correct? Don’t repost it - instead, ask a librarian to help you find correct information! My favorite moment in library school was when we each had a week to lead discussion boards, and ask reference questions that other students had to answer. I threw in a fake quote attributed to Marx that makes its rounds on Christian apologetics websites: “The first battlefield is the rewriting of history”. I’ve never been able to find it in the collections of Marx’s writings, or any other Marxist for that matter. In response, I got linked by another student (potential librarian!) to a quotes website. I said that was a great resource, and I particularly liked the quote they gave: “The best thing for rich people to do is become Batman” - Karl Marx. -- source link
