vertiga:A worker (female bee) and a drone (male bee). Drones are easy to spot in a hive but rarely seen outside it, so most people have never seen these lorge boys. Drones don’t have stingers, don’t collect nectar or build comb, don’t look after young bees or defend the hive. Their only function is to fly out and compete to mate with a new queen on her mating flight, and until that happens they hang out inside the hive and eat honey. Drones will often be thrown out of the hive in winter in order to save resources. -- source link
