Don’t forget ChippawaIf you take the Niagara Parkway 10 minutes past the Falls, winding around abandoned power stations, empty river look-outs, and depressing parking lot signs, you’ll see the Surfside Inn just before the hamlet of Chippawa. It’s the last of the Parkway motels to the southeast of all the hyperbole. Truth be told, there’s not much surf here. The river shuttles by silently on its way to an audience and apotheosis. Still, the neon burns against the coming night, stark in its stand against the quietness of the road. Most people who encounter the sign these days use the adjacent parking lot to double back toward Clifton Hill.Spend a half hour taking photographs of this place in the summer and you’ll see a parade of cars circle around themselves in a bird-like choreography, lights rising and falling across the humble facade. You wouldn’t want to stay here. Nightly guests are met with quizzical stares.Winter is a different story. Things slow down. The traffic just passes by. Plop down $55 and you might get some peace for the night. No one expects tourists. To choose this place is to announce that you belong here.Draw the drapes and sleep alongside old Niagara. -- source link
