Roman lighthouse at Dover Castle (Kent, England).Portus Dubris, also known as Dubrae, was a Roman port on the site ofmodern-day Dover. A fort was built during the 100s, as well asharbour installations and two lighthouses, one of which has survived. Dubris was a major base on the British coast for much of thatcentury.In the mid-to-late 200s, the Romans built a Saxon shore fort on thewest bank of the Dour Estuary, with high hills shadowing it to thesouth-west. It had walls 2.42 metres thick (made of tufa and chalkblocks), several external towers, and bastions that suggest anunusual trapezoid-shaped outer wall.Dubris and Gesoriacum were twin bases that worked together to guardthe channel straits. Dubris may have been the seat of an officer ofthe Saxon Shore force. -- source link
