Dressed Stones Awaiting Placement during Construction of the Washington National Cathedral, Autumn 1
Dressed Stones Awaiting Placement during Construction of the Washington National Cathedral, Autumn 1974.The Cathedral was nearing the final stages of construction in 1974, though stone work was not completed until 1990. In the 1970s construction was focused on the west façade and towers with Indiana-quarried limestone used for the facing materials. Construction required a number of expert stone masons, some imported from Europe and others trained on the site. Watching them work could be a fascinating, if dusty, activity on a nice afternoon. Sadly the tradition of services in the Cathedral commemorating the inauguration of a new president is of necessity going to be broken in 2021. The Cathedral has adhered to a ban on in-person events since the pandemic began. The service for President Biden will only be available virtually. A virtual antidote to the horrors of 6 January, the Cathedral is broadcasting “Prayers for our Nation” each evening at 5 up to Inauguration Day. -- source link
