erikkwakkel:Cathedral of the bookThis unreal 19th-century image of Cincinnati Public Library stands out among the library images I tweeted and blogged about over the past year - readers of my project’s Wordpress blog may recognize it. The picture takes us into a large, dark room, with high ceilings. Light is sprinkled over high stacks of books, which look like matchboxes. Cast-iron pillars hold up the ceiling and give the place the appearance of a cathedral, where readers come to worship the book.Centre piece of this quiet scene is a man in a white shirt. Browsing the shelves, he appears to be hovering through the picture, as if standing on an invisible cloud. To me, the thrill of this photograph is that it captures a moment when a reader in the past, a person that has become part of history himself, interacts with books. The scene is so vivid that it is as if we are visitors of this library ourselves.
