yougottaletitout:The Audition songs are there for two purposes: - Let you make a snap judgement about the characters, which is useful in understanding the trope they portray. (Particularly Artie who doesn’t even get a song, all he gets is a wheelchair and a girl who needs to help him out because he can’t reach the audition list.)- Show you who they are. R-E-S-P-E-C-TFind out what it means to meR-E-S-P-E-C-TTake care of TCBMercedes sings the Aretha Franklin version of Respect, in a way that we only hear her sing the lines that are exclusive to Aretha’s version. Aretha’s version has changed the tone of the original significantly, and it’s now the song of a strong independent woman.Mercedes, more than anyone, is supposed to be that girl. She’s supposed to be the girl who is fine with her body despite the beauty ideals of our society. She’s supposed to be the sane girl who is fine being single. She’s supposed to be the diva demanding solos, and so forth. This is particularly obvious in Home, where Quinn speaks of her admiration for Mercedes’ self acceptance. And though this is a good quality (Like Quinn’s anger in Funk), it also is a part of the trope she’s portraying. Just like she says in Bad Reputation: “Why do people assume I’m angry all the time? It’s called being sassy.”Angry Black Women/Girls are a negative stereotype, but unfortunately being independent and strong as a (black) woman can be easily read as being angry, because it’s intimidating. Especially for people like Will who always feels personally victimized by his students/his wife/his exes/everyone/the world/Sue Sylvester.(Mercedes is actually a soft-spoken and nice girl most of the time, but in the pilot in particular we mostly just see her angry side. It doesn’t help that she has about two lines in this episode.) What we hear, outside of the words, is Mercedes being loud and in your face, especially when she does those runs. It beings from the moment where she starts singing rather than just naming the song in her line “I’m Mercedes Jones and I’ll be singing-“ And though she isn’t Angry Black Girl at all, that’s what Will notices and he only gives her solos that are songs by black artists to sing. Oh, and she gets to wail on the last note. But what respect means to Mercedes isn’t getting the final note every time they need to end a group number, it means being allowed to have the closing song during The Night Of Neglect. It means being in the Troubletones where your work is appreciated, and where you can share the time in the spotlight with your friends equally. So 2,5 season later and Mr Schuester still hasn’t found out what R-E-S-P-E-C-T means to her. Fortunately, most of the girls in ND have. -- source link
