godsgifttotheyaois: #AUGHHHH NOOOOO#THIS IS THE WORST THING FOR GARNET TO HEAR AND I HATE ITWhat jumps out to me about that line is that being physically stronger doesn’t really seem to be why Amethyst and Pearl want to fuse with Garnet so much. I mean, it’s very probably part of it given how focused Gem self-worth seems to be on fighting, but it’s really obvious that wanting physical strength isn’t what primarily draws them to her. Like, Amethyst hates herself and resents being corrected by others, and Sugilite loves herself so much she refuses to unfuse or moderate her behavior for anyone or anything, and Pearl feels so lonely, unseen, unmoored, and useless while Sardonyx is a Performer who can’t be ignored and whose confidence came off to me as positively snide(those pointed comments to Amethyst). What’s really drawing Amethyst and Pearl to Garnet, and what makes both fusions so liable to become unhealthy, is Garnet’s confidence, self-esteem, and self-love, and how that emotional “Strength” allows both Amethyst and Pearl to cover up their insecurities and ignore their flaws.Another thing about Cry for Help that stood out for me is that Garnet fused with Pearl repeatedly while she was secretly repairing the signal station and never learned what Pearl was doing. This has been hinted at throughout the other Fusion episodes(Particularly We Need to Talk and with Malachite in general), but Cry for Help makes it explicit that while Fusion might be a melding of beings into a new being, it isn’t really a melding of minds. Partners can keep secrets from one another, be subsumed or over powered within the other, can lose themselves unhealthfully within the greater whole, on top of becoming dependent upon the fusion and their partner to “fix” their emotional problems instead of doing the hard(and possibly entirely alien for the Gems) work of dealing as we’ve seen in Sugilite and Sardonyx. And then you have Garnet herself, a person built from the hard work of real compassion, mutual affection warts and all, and understanding. Fusion in SU has turned out to be such a good and honest metaphor for relationships; I just wish more media was willing to be so upfront about the difficulties and pitfalls they can present, as well as the good times uwu -- source link
