A map of San Francisco’s Chinatown, made in 1885 for a report “on the Condition of the Chinese Quarter.” Around this time, Chinese immigrants to the United States were scapegoated for some of the problems that San Francisco had with disease, drugs, and gambling. The Board of Health called the area “the Chinese cancer” and a “nuisance.” On the map, purported gambling establishments are colored pink and “opium resorts” are yellow; on each building, it is noted whether the owners and residents are white or Chinese. {WHF} {HTE} {Medium} -- source link
