RolandScene from Jean-Baptiste Lully’s 1685 opera Roland1693Engraving (unsigned), probably by Johannes van den Aveele (Dutch; d. 1727)Published: Recueil des opera, Tome III (Amsterdam)The New York Public Library, Dance CollectionRoland, a “tragédie en musique” with music by Jean-Baptiste Lully and libretto by Philippe Quinault, was first performed by the Académie Royale de Musique before King Louis XIV at Versailles, on January 8, 1685. Roland premiered in the stables at Versailles, which had been specially adapted for the splendid occasion. Later that year Roland was performed to great acclaim at the theater of the Palais Royal, Paris. -- source link
