Woman Playing a Lute (c.1700-1705). Giuseppe Maria Crespi (Italian (Bolognese), 1665-1747). Oil on canvas. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.Although Crespi was a fine portrait painter, he is best known for his lively, informally posed scenes of daily life, which influenced artists throughout Europe in the 18th century. At once immediate and timeless, this study of a young woman absorbed in tuning her lute demonstrates Crespi’s gift for characterization and for enriching a subtle palette with warm, diffuse light. -- source link
