INFO: The Mau Mau Uprising (1952-19560) in British-occupied Kenya involved Kikuyu-dominated anti-colonial groups called Mau Mau. The Kikuyu are a group of Bantu people in Southeast Africa - the largest ethnic group in Kenya. Largely due to British policy of “divide and rule” (deliberately breaking up larger concentrations of power) and some internal divisions, the Mau Mau uprising was stifled from capturing widespread support. The British put Mau Mau Kenyans in detention and work camps. British troops smashing another colonial rebellion in Malaya aided the military effort. It’s estimated the British killed in excess of 20,000 involved in the uprising and used capital punishment against an astounding total of 1,090 Mau Mau militants. Many believe the Mau Mau conflict helped set the stage for Kenyan independence in December 1963, or at least secured the prospect of Black-majority rule once the British left.
