Betrayals, by Ian K. SteeleThe subject of Betrayals is an examination of the massacre scene depicted in James Fenmore Cooper’s Last of the Mohicans. The alleged massacre occurred during the French and Indian War, after the British surrender of Fort William Henry in August of 1757. The Indians who were allied with the French felt betrayed when the British and Americans were allowed to leave the fort, not only unharmed, but also carrying their most valuable possessions. What happened next is the matter of controversy. Did the Indians really attack and massacre the retreating British and Americans in violation of the agreement with the French? Steele makes a strong case, using primary sources, that the “massacre” of the defenders of Fort William Henry was mostly exaggerated. -- source link
