jumpingjacktrash:dear everyone who thinks eye contact is super meaningfull and you can tell whether i’m listening by how much of it you’re getting from me: i guarantee you if i’m staring directly into your eyes, all i’m thinking is “eye contact is a thing i should do now i guess, yep, eye contact, wow look at those eyes just contacting all over the place” and i have no idea what you said.whereas if i’m knitting, petting my cat, loading the dishwasher, playing minecraft, or painting my nails, i am not only taking in every word, i’m really really thinking about what you’re saying, in a way only autistics do — i’ve got an overclocked processor, i’m thinking about everything.now, there are times when my verbal processing breaks down. because my brain processes every single little thing, it can get overloaded and stop taking input. then, your mouth noises convey no data to me; i can’t ‘try harder’, i’m just getting static. when that happens, i’ll ask you to text me or wait. again, eye contact or attentive posture have absolutely no positive effect on this, and in fact use up processing cycles i could be using to understand what you’re telling me.basically, allistics, what you need to ask yourself when talking to an autistic is this: do i just want them to look listeny? or do i want to genuinely communicate?ps: if you just want me to look listeny, you’re out of luck. i’m a grownup and i don’t have to put up with that shit anymore. >:D -- source link
