Do you know the story of how the message of Jesus first got to North Korea? It’s pretty crazy, and seemingly ends with a massive failure. But keep reading. God can redeem any situation…Robert Jermain Thomas was a Welsh missionary with a heart for Korea - but no foreigners were allowed into the hermit kingdom in the middle of the nineteenth century. So, he went to China and bided his time. In 1866, he found his opportunity, and joined an American ship, the SS General Sherman, that was heading for Pyongyang in the hopes of trading with the Koreans. Thomas took as many copies of the Bible as he could carry, with the intention of finding scholars who spoke Chinese. But he was never to fulfil his mission. The ship got stuck on a sandbank and the Koreans, fearful of attack, killed them all, including Thomas. It seemed the mission to bring the Good News to North Korea was doomed. However, God was not finished here.Accounts differ in the fine details as to what happened, but somehow those Chinese Bibles made it to shore. Years later, it was discovered that a local Korean had used pages from a Chinese Bible to wallpaper his house. As people read the walls, the Christian Gospel spread. Within fifteen years, Pyongyang became a strong Christian center with a hundred churches.150 years later, the name of Jesus is forbidden in North Korea, but it’s not unknown. There are up to 400,000 secret Christians. Life isn’t easy, and the dangers of being caught are extreme… but people still choose to follow Him. Amazing.Today, take time to thank God for your freedom to worship and live out your faith. Ask for boldness to show Jesus in your words and actions. Find God’s plan and purpose, even in the midst of failure and devastation. And pray for those who are following Jesus in North Korea, despite the risks. -- source link
