yougottaletitout:On my ownPretending he’s beside me(slushie + voiceover)Without himThe world around me changesThe trees are bare and everywhereThe streets are full of strangers I love him But every day I’m learningAll my life I’ve only been pretendingWithout meHis world will go on turningA world that’s full of happiness That I have never known(slushie)I love him I love himI love himBut only on my own On My Own is edited into the episode in a completely different manner from the other Auditions. Not only that, it’s edited in a way that’s completely different from most of the songs on this show: it rarely happens that people speak during performances, because song is so important to these characters. Even when people sing inappropriate duet no. 5 they aren’t stopped from doing so, but are only called out after they’re done singing.Where for the other characters this was a short introduction to their trope, Rachel takes things into her own hand. She literally introduces herself: from the gold star metaphor being her approach to life, to how her dads brought her up, to how she trains her skill. (And of course this makes her seem like a know-it-all, because she literally intercepts us from judging her book by her cover.)One of the points during her voice over is that she mentions being spoiled by her two dads while get to see a flashback of a young Rachel tapdancing. Éponine, who sings this song in Les Miz, is also a pampered during her youth. Rachel also mentions:“Nowadays, being anonymous is worse than being poor.”And being poor is exactly the thing Éponine has to go through during the rest of her life. Rachel isn’t literally poor, but she is unknown and nobody cares about her talents unless it’s to troll on her page. (Which, by her own standards, is worse)The lyrics are cut up in such a way that the song becomes least about ‘him’ and mostly about Rachel and The World. In that sense, even the parts that are about ‘him’: “Without me, his world will go on turning” only moreso indicate that Rachel at this point in time has no influence, and doesn’t mean anything to anyone, which corresponds with her point about being anonymous. This song is about loneliness and unrequited love, and in that sense it really works well together with Where is love, as it’s one big pile of loved by no one for Rachel right now. This is also illustrated by the cheerleaders cyberbullying her, and Puck throwing two slushies in her face.Again, the only people that like her are her dads, and those are still the type of people that make Rachel feel as if she’d be nobody without her voice. Another interesting remark that Rachel makes is how she has no time to date because of her MySpace schedule. While her schedule consists of recording hello notice me-performances. The first boy who shows interest who sings with her makes her completely throw away that conviction. (Although to be frank, she only throws it away when she’s convinced their feelings are mutual, as she often ignores their romance entirely when Finn was too busy being an ass.)“A world that’s full of happiness / That I have never known” Correspond with her reasons to try out in the first place, as she attempts to be parts of that world:“Being part of something special makes you special.” In the end, we see her loneliness and need to have someone, anyone as a reason for many of her decisions. From writing a song called Only Child, to accepting Finn’s proposal. On My Own is the first song that’s officially released, but it’s still not the entire song. The parts that aren’t in the episode actually work as an interesting way of foreshadowing that’ll go on between Finn and Rachel during the F13:“And I know it’s only in my mindThat I’m talking to myself and not to himAnd although I know that he is blindStill I say, there’s a way for us.” Thoughts!1: I COMPLETELY missed the connection between Les Miserables as context and being anonymous is worse than being poor, faaaaaaaail. Good catch, you.2: I love how all of these auditions introduce us to the characters and give us an overview of what to expect from them. Kurt is going to have issues with passing and being gay. Mercedes is going to be denied respect. Artie is going to need to fight to be seen, let alone to get on stage. Tina is going to hide. And Rachel just wants to be a part of something special. Or as she says in OS–to feel special, and chosen.3: I enjoy how you point up that Rachel’s words in her voice over, while revealing, are not true on face value. It’s the gap between what she sounds like and what she means, where things happen. It’s a pretty fundamental thing for this show–for a lot of shows, really. It makes for interesting or at least compelling or honest characters and stories, for me.4: Regardless of her dialogue, her song is completely honest, and maybe that should have been a clue.5: Love this show. Love how you’re exploring the function of music in it, because it adds so much meaning–as it should be, in a musical. I feel like we miss half the stories when we just see Rachel singing a showtune. -- source link
