For the crew aboard the International Space Station (ISS), a section of the Earth at night is visible 16 times a day. On this particular pass, taken on August 9, 2015, the ISS is above the island of Kiribatit, located about 2,600 km (1,600 miles) south of Hawaii. The curvature of the Earth is illuminated by a variety of airglow layers in orange, green, and red, while breathtaking stars in one of the inner spiral arms of the Milky Way Galaxy can be clearly seen in the background. On Earth, a lightning storm is visible through an equatorial cloud sheet providing even further beauty to this image. Talk about a room with a view. -Jean Image courtesy of NASAhttp://go.nasa.gov/21l8GPa -- source link
