ancientart:A collection of ancient Roman frescos recovered from Vesuvian Ash in Stabiae, 1st century BCE-1st century CE.Stabiae was an ancient Roman town located about 4.5 km southwest of Pompeii. Being close to Mount Vesuvius, Stabiae was largely destroyed by two metres of tephra ash in 79 AD when the Mount erupted, and was not to be rediscovered until 1749. From the volcanic ash, which is actually an excellent preservation mechanism, such frescos were uncovered -some of the most stunning artistic remains from Roman villas ever found.Courtesy & currently located at the Museo Archaeologico Nazionale di Napoli in Naples, Italy.
